Kahungunu Health Authority: August Update
Progress continues to build towards shaping a dedicated Kahungunu Health Authority (KHA), driven by a shared commitment to regional unity, innovation, and long-term wellbeing.
Guided by the overarching kaupapa of Mokopuna Futures, current work focuses on designing a health system tailored to the needs of upcoming generations. This framework draws on traditional blueprints like Pinepine te Kura to navigate changing environments, break cycles of intergenerational trauma, and leverage modern tools like AI to build whānau capability for self-determined care.
Rather than simply adapting existing structures, it challenges us to anticipate future trends and design proactive health responses that ensure current actions set a strong foundation for future mokopuna.
Recent efforts led by project leader Dr. Mara Andrews have generated critical insights across the rohe:
- Provider Engagement: Engagement with major Hauora providers across Kahungunu gathered vital whānau voice, research, and provider insights. Discussions centred on addressing ongoing workforce shortages and establishing a virtual, coordinated service model to share staff, resources, and Kahungunu-centric educational materials.
- Evidence Analysis: A thorough review of local Community Health Plans, research reports, and whānau experiences is underway to map core themes and shape future KHA functions.
- Future-Focused Innovation: Project teams are evaluating health technology, digital opportunities, global Indigenous health models, and flexible insurance structures to build an agile, modern authority.
- Mokopuna Futures Framework: A draft discussion paper detailing the “Mokopuna Futures” framework has been completed to guide strategic priorities.
Reflecting on this progress, Tihei Tākitimu Co-Chair Kerri Nuku noted:
“The wānanga in early July confirmed a shared commitment to pursuing a future that is grounded in rangatiratanga, unity, innovation, and improved outcomes for Kahungunu whānau.”
Following the principle that “form follows function,” governance structures will be finalized once core operational priorities are set. Stakeholders will gather at the next wānanga on 25 September to review these findings and help chart the path forward.
